ENCINITAS (June 12, 2017) – Coast Law Group today announced the arrival of their latest rebel with a cause. Nationally recognized litigator Helen Zeldes will be launching the firm’s Class Action practice group and is joining the firm as a Partner.
“Helen’s seventeen-year career as a litigator tells a consistent story; whether she is prosecuting a case against a fortune 500 company, a public agency, or an influential politician. she simply doesn’t shy away from a fight against a bully if that’s what it takes to get justice for her clients,” said Seyamack Kouretchian, Coast Law Group’s Co-Managing Partner. “We are thrilled to launch Coast Law Group’s class action practice with a tenacious, principled and successful attorney at the helm.”
From the outset of her career Helen has taken on corporate wrongdoing at the highest levels and by the biggest companies. She has prosecuted insurance companies AIG, Allianz and Midland National for senior annuities fraud, commercial laundry behemoth CINTAS for misclassifying its drivers as salespeople to avoid paying overtime, and State Farm and Allstate for race discrimination and charging racial minorities higher premiums than their white counterparts. In so doing, Helen has achieved victories valued in the hundreds of millions for her clients.
Among her prior accomplishments, Helen initiated the first lawsuit against Donald Trump and Trump University in 2010 after meeting with students who were robbed of tens of thousands of dollars spent on worthless Trump University courses. She went on to assemble and serve on the litigation team that represented the nationwide class of consumers – prosecuting and settling the case for more than $25 million.
Before standing up to Donald Trump, Helen successfully took on the County of San Diego and Supervisor Dave Roberts. She represented a former County employee to resolve claims of misconduct including the Supervisor forcing her to perform campaign activities on County time, and pressuring her to lie to investigators.
Helen’s recent cases continue the tradition of taking on powerful corporations, institutions and individuals on behalf of their victims. After serving as Co-Lead Class Counsel for nearly seven years, Helen recently attained final approval of a settlement against SONY in a case alleging defects in the touchpads of more than 400,000 VAIO Notebooks that had rendered them effectively useless. This comes on the heels of her successful litigation against Apple Inc. in which she reached nationwide settlements valued in the hundreds of millions on behalf of consumers alleging defective power adapters.
As a partner with CLG, Helen is now standing up for millions of Southern California drivers as Co-Lead Counsel in a case against the operators of The Toll Roads. This case alleges excessive and unfair fines as well as privacy violations perpetrated by the Transportation Corridor Agencies and a handful of private defendants. “I am proud to join a law firm with a track record of fearless advocacy for its clients, and look forward to continuing in that tradition with the launch of the Class Action practice group,” said Zeldes. “Partnering with Coast Law Group will enable me to expand my work representing the little guy – and standing up to powerful corporations and institutions who expect their abuses to go unchecked.”
Zeldes has spent the last nine years of her practice as a founding partner at Zeldes, Haeggquist & Eck LLP, and previously worked for many years at the nation’s largest plaintiff’s class action firm, Robbins, Gellar, Rudman & Dowd (Formerly “Lerach Coughlin” and “Milberg Weiss”).
She was named a San Diego Super Lawyer in 2017, nominated for the 2016 National association of Women Business Owners’ Woman Business Owner of the Year award and was a 2016 finalist in the San Diego Business Journal’s Women Who Mean Business Awards.
Zeldes is a small business owner and surf art supporter – captaining two galleries that support local coastal artists (here in San Diego and also Hawaii). She also champions sustainable farming as the Chair of the Development Committee on the Board of the Berry Good Food Foundation and serves on the Advisory Board of Think Dignity.
